Apprenticeships have been introduced as part of the Government’s drive to create a first class system of vocational and technical learning, offering young people a wider choice of flexible learning routes and at the same time helping to narrow the skills gap.  Some young people are at age 14 attracted to a more practical style of learning involving time spent in a work setting. 

The CLAC programme offers pupils the chance to gain a taste of ‘real work’ in a supported way, and to lay the foundations for a post 16 apprenticeship whilst retaining the full range of other options for future training and study.  It contributes to a more personalised approach to teaching and learning, centred on understanding the different learning styles and needs of individuals.

Which schools will be involved?

Students from all Luton High Schools will be able to participate.  There are a maximum of 20 places available this year.

What will it involve?

Students who are successful in obtaining a place on the programme will:

• Attend Barnfield College (Enterprise Way site) one day per
  week throughout years 10 and 11.
• Take part in work experience/work related learning activities for 20 days.
• Attend school for the rest of the time to follow a core curriculum.

What qualifications will be achieved at the end of the programme?

As long as students attend regularly for two years they can achieve:

• A BTEC First Diploma in Construction (which is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s Grades A*-C)
• Construction Skills Health and Safety Award
• A certificate endorsed by local employers

In addition to these, students will achieve the GCSE qualifications they will study in school.

Advice and support for students will be provided by Connexions throughout the programme.
